Everything I've read and heard since I retired is that education has gotten more lock step, even to the extent of wanting teachers on literally the same paper day by day. I could never teach like that. When I taught 1st and 2nd grade I had great success teaching kids to read. We did a couple of big plays per year right before Winter Break and summer vacation. I wrote my own scrips for material like Annie, The Wizard of OZ, Snow White and we used the scripts as our reading material. I don't know if I could even do that now.

Speaking of bucking school boards, you should find this story interesting. We took over the twice annual school photos at our junior high and re raises a firestorm of protest--just not from the parents.
