Exactly right on target. I taught 1st and 2nd grade and while I could not get the kids to agree on a favorite book to read over and over, I could do it easily with song. I used a pocket chart and a pointer and introduced a song a week that we sang over and over. The kids loved singing and their only responsibility was to watch the pointer and follow the words. At center time one group would go to the pocket chart and their job was to rebuild the song (individual words in a pile at their feet) as a team. They’d sing their way through the job every afternoon. At Christmas, they each got a book and tape with all of our songs. Parents would report back that singing their songbook was a favorite vacation past time.

However as easy as it is, reading everyday to your kids, it’s not being done. My wife taught kindergarten for 34 years and she watched the readiness on incoming students steadily decline. Too much TV, too many video games, too much electronics in general. Many parents plug their kids in and do their own thing.

Nothing can take the place of reading to your kids.
