How much is enough? Important question, especially when it requires that your partner be on the same page. With my first wife there would never have been enough. In ten years we went from a apartment, to our first house two bedroom one bath, to a new three bedroom, two bath. After two kids were born she was ready for a bigger house. This was one of many factors that ended our marriage. I've been married 35 years the second time around. I had two kids, she had two and we had another together. We raised them all in a two bedroom one bath house. As the kids grew I added a bedroom and a bath to our detached garage. I was able to retire at fifty-five because my wife is never worried about having enough, that enabled us to increase a our monthly savings every time we got a raise. It may seem strange, but our house just got bigger each time one of the kids moved out. Now it's full of grand kids. It all boils down to this: If you live above your means, you will always be broke and mired in debt. If you live at your means you will never save a dime. If you live below your means, you can save and invest and retire when you want.
