I could not agree more. Never the less the government has the power to secure the future of Social Security or end it by doing nothing. There is a heafty surplus right now, but it will be depleted by 2035. See attached SSA report.

SS is a critical program for millions of Americans as you have noted. It just needs a few tweeks to keep it viable. The simplest fix is removing the cap on payments into the program. The cap is currently set at $147,000. Why anyone needs a built in tax break on income over $147,000 is beyond my comprehension. Removing the cap fixes the program overnight. Most people never reach that lofty wage, those that do would hardly notice the difference.
