…beneficial. After all, there are no real winners when we force too much math on students and in the process end up with people who are too math-phobic to effectively use the relatively elementary math that they actually do need.

I think one reason some adults are math phobic because they are not well grounded in the basics. My son teaches middle school math. He has a great many students who are stumped by 6x7, or 19+8. When you are stuck at that level, math is scary and to be avoided.
