I'm not so sure about Linux specific machines. I've put Linux on a variety of PC hardware. Over the years Linux in general has gotten much better at recognizing various components. I remember a balky PC that crashed often using Windows XP. I turned it into a Linux server at my middle school and it reliably served 700 students and faculty handling all usernames and passwords with ease for both Macs and PC's on campus.
