It's always nice to be able to ask a question, but I've been put off by the same shit. I'm a dabbler too but I've written some pretty cool stuff in python. I find a wealth of information in questions that have already been asked and answered. Sometimes just pasting a snippet of code in the browser brings forth a ton of information as well. I got started trying to flesh out the code for this project.
