I've finally purged most of the authors who promote such ideas and other get rich quick themes. My regular feed was chuck full of their articles otherwise. I've wondered if Medium promotes them. There is enough job dissatisfaction without actively feeding it.

The promoters always play up the "creative" side of self employment. They never mention the tedium of dealing with all the government agencies. The sales tax board, The payroll tax agency. Federal and state unemployment. The IRS. The fact that self employed pay both parts of Social Security and Medicare, their regular share and their "employers" share. Most of these people think bookkeeping is a once a year endeavor at tax time, when it's really just another part of the daily grind. The being woefully unprepared they complain bitterly about the draconian rules of the IRS.

They whine about working for the man, but few self employed are a one-man shop. I managed a dozen employees for twenty-five years. It's not easy to find and keep good people.
