Lawns are an English tradition, a country with a moist environment. I took my lawns out in 2016 in the midst of a California drought. I replaced the lawns, front and back with small planting areas of drought resistant plants and drip irrigation and shredded bark that helps trap the moisture. The landscape uses a fraction of the water it did before. I'm also free of the drudgery of mowing the lawns.

Some neighbors did the same, but with a wet year in 2018, many reseeded their lawns. Surprise we are back in the drought, actually we never left it.
