So, sometime in the next hundred years or so, the southern Democrats — who had previously supported slavery and the subsequent oppression of black people — became Republicans. You see, the party that supported ending slavery wasn’t keen on the whole “black people are equal” thing, so when a bunch of northern Democrats pushed the idea of civil rights, the southern Democrats defected.
