No doubt the fossil fuel industry has a strangle hold on the economy. But it's not just fuel. If it were not for fossil fuel based nitrogen fertilizer half the Earth's population would starve. Not to mention a very high percentage of consumer and industrial products are made from fossil fuel derivatives.
