Our present economic system thrives on growth, expansion and robust consumption. We have built a throw-away consumer culture. The fashion industry makes sure what you are wearing goes out of style, appliances have a short life span. People are constantly tempted by advertizing to upgrade to the newest technology. With the holiday shopping season upon us most gifts given will find the landfill in four months. Yet. if we slow down the machinery the economy goes into a tailspin.
