Out side of the selfish concern of capitalists to keep filling their pockets, why is continued expansion preferable to contraction.

On the one hand we shrink the population to a sustainable level and slowly restore the health of the environment.

On the other hand we can hope desperately that technology will save us as we hurtle uncontrolled to the next extinction challenge.
