People come for the opportunity of a better life. Who can blame them? But American businesses play a large role in aiding and abetting illegal immigration, because through their greed they are willing to hire undocumented workers. The INS raids businesses and deports the undocumented, but the business rehires a fresh batch on undocumented the very next day. Although their are laws and penalties associated with this common practice, they are not enforced. It's an ongoing game of whack-a-mole. If we confiscated the assets and jailed the perpetrators the practice would end and the incentive to cross our borders would be diminished as well.

But that might harm the economy and the economy is the holy grail--all that really matters to politicians. So they posture and promote walls knowing all the while that 70,000 vehicles and 20,000 pedestrians cross the San Ysidro border alone every single day. Mexico is our largest trading partner so there is no way the U.S. will clog that or any border with real inspections because it would snarl traffic for years and hurt the holy grail, our economy.
