Sure it is but there is a cost involved, but compared to what? If we ruin our environment and the planet is unlivable, what will the cost matter then. There are two ways to go about it, rationing like they did during WWII or increasing the gas taxes to price people out of the market. I favor rationing so everybody is in the same boat, rather than basing it on what you can afford, this gives advantage the wealthy. Rationing forces change and accomodations we ignore at present. Car pooling, public transit, walking, biking and simply not wasting gas on frivouous trips. Rationing would make you think before you hopped in the car. It would be a sacrifice, but again, compared to what? Extinction.
