The advent of trickle down economics in the mid 80s. At the same time they began paring away taxation of the top income brackets. Prior to 1980, the top tax bracket never fell below 70 percent. Lastly banking deregulation led to financial mayhem. These factors knocked everything out of whack and led to rampant inequality.
