The Earth had an incredible water system, the ultimate in recycling. We don't receive deliveries of fresh water from outer space. Our drinking water comes from the same original supply that the dinosaurs bathed in. However, humans have done their level best to destroy a perfect system. 70% of industrial waste is still dumped directly into our water supply to this day. In our system, corporate profits always trumps conservation. Polluting is always more cost effective than the steps necessary to avoid it.
