“The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits.”

I believe this one statement has been received as an invitation for corporate corruption and pollution by big business. With the prime directive to enrich the shareholder, workers have become replaceable simply by the expedient finding the cheapest labor source. It has led venerable institutions like Wells Fargo to stoop to fraud to increase profits. It has led to decisions like that of General Motors that it's more cost effective to settle wrongful death suits than to replace a $10 ignition switch. Under Friedman's prime directive it is always more cost effective to cut corners and pollute than to protect the environment. I believe Friedman has done more to corrupt capitalism than any other.
