We have a deep ignorance of our own history. We teach a white-washed version of history in our schools. Otherwise, it would be clear our founding fathers were not perfect. When our history began only white male landowners could vote. Women could not vote. Our founding predecessors owned slaves. We treated indigenous people horribly. Inter-racial marriage was against the law. But we persist with our kindergarten rendition of pilgrims and Indians. We don’t talk about the downside to westward expansion or the horseshit of manifest destiny. Instead, our nation was a beacon on a hill. Instead of seeing our true history and taking a bit of pride in our halting progress, Americans prefer to maintain a fairytale.
