We raised our kids in a slightly earlier age. When my wife and I blended our family the kids were K and pre K, right on the cusp of learning to read. We decided that we could easily live without a TV in a effort to encourage reading.

For a new reader, the book is not better than the movie. The words don't instantly paint a wonderful picture. That development takes a bit of time--that's why reading aloud to your kids is so important.
